Tell Me Thursday 4/24/08 - Homeschooling at it’s best!

Ruby Kinglet -oneYesterday I posted these two photos for Wordless Wednesday. My oldest daughter drew them last Saturday - pretty good huh?

The nice thing about taking a relaxed approach to homeschooling is that you see all of life as school. So school doesn’t just happen between the hours of 8 am and 3 pm but it can happen on a Saturday afternoon before dinner.

We were working in the yard Saturday afternoon and I realized I needed to head back into the house to start dinner. When I got to the deck, I saw this little Ruby Kinglet bird flipped over in front of the grill. We often have birds flying beak first into our windows - sometimes they die instantly from the impact but most of the time they’re stunned and after a few minutes they fly away. This little guy was still recovering but I could see he was breathing so I flipped him over onto his feet and he just sat their panting.

Ruby Kinglet -twoI called the girls and told them to bring the camera. My oldest started snapping photos left and right. I picked up the bird and he let me hold it - thus the bird in the hand picture (I still had on my gardening gloves) and as we tried to transfer him over to my youngest daughter’s hand, the bird jumped onto her shirt and just rested there. So cute.

We placed him carefully in one of the flower beds to finish catching his breath and in about 30 minutes he decide he was ready and flew off.

Both girls immediately loaded the pics up on the computer and printed off a few to draw in their nature journals. A side note - don’t wait until your kids can actually draw to do nature journaling - start NOW!

Now mind you, neither of the girls have had formal art lessons - we’ve taken a few video courses and have books that cover the basics but most of their drawing is done by …well just doing it. Will they be world famous artists? Probably not. But do they do some nice work? Yepper!

I’ll post some more of the live bird pictures later - they’re very fun.

  1. wow, they can draw very well. can’t do that myself. i will try to encourage my girl start journaling. :)

    Happy TMT!

  2. Beautiful art and story! It’s so great that you take the time to notice the “little things”.

  3. Those are so wonderful and that experience sounds awesome, too. I love that aspect of homeschooling, that it is just all the time, and since I haven’t been able to homeschool - I just try to make all of our time together possible learning experiences. I guess you could say I homeschool when they’re not at ’school’. LOL

  4. Yep, Lisa - I find a lot of parents actually do homeschooling even though their kids are in school! Thanks for your comment!

  5. I love this store and the drawings are wonderful. I would love to hear more about the nature journals, I think it is a wonderful idea.

  6. My fav is the second one! :-)

  7. A nature journal.. I never even thought of that. Madisyn will love this.
Your girl’s drawings are beautiful Annette!

  8. You’ve brought back to many lovely memories of being homeschooled for me. And your girls are such a talent…as many homeschoolers I knew.

I still remember writing a book as a pre-teen, reading all of the time, sketching nature, journaling and all of those creative things.

I would love to meet you and your girls one day.
