Tell Me Thursday 3/13/08

Here’s my TMT for Thursday 3/13/08.
Well I’ve told you before that I’m dutch and if my Wordless Wednesday picture that I posted yesterday HERE doesn’t prove it then I don’t know what would. Why else would a completely normal (ok, that’s relative, I know) family dress up like THAT and smile! LOL!
Seriously though - we had fun! Every year in August the nearby town of Momence, Illinois would have their gladiolus festival. Lots of Dutch folk lived in Momence, including our family when my parents first immigrated here. Back in those days a church would sponsor a family to come over from “the old country” and since my dad’s sister and older brother were already in Momence, it seemed natural for my folks to move there too. So they did. (My sister and I often questioned our parents… of ALL the places in the entire United States you pick a leeeetle town called Momence Illinois - we could have grown up in New York City or Hollywood or Florida or anyplace else that might have been at least a little FUN!)
Anyway, my mother made us our dutch costumes and I think my grandparents sent over the authentic dutch caps we wore. My father does know how to play the accordion (very well in fact) and my poor sister actually went through a few years of accordion lessons with that thing on her lap. That would explain the expression on her face - tee hee!
My expression needs no explanation as you can see. I obviously need a tissue or something. Gimme a break - I was young and boogers are dreadfully irritating at that age. What’s a girl to do?
You can’t see it in the picture but I think we even had wooden shoes on. Pretty cool. There are still some places in Holland where the people still dress like this - it’s really fun.
Anyway, for the gladiolus festival they had a parade and everything and the year this photo was taken we were featured on a float - accordions and all! It was always a fun day and the flowers were really beautiful!
Hmmmm…maybe we’ll drive down to Momence this August and check it out. I think they still hold the festival every year!
Happy TMT!
