Tell Me Thursday 2/21/08
Finally my Tell me Thursday for February 21, 2008.
It’ll be a quickie to tell you all about this photo of my parents 50 years ago on their wedding day.
It’s hard to imagine that my folks have been married for 50 years because in my mind they’ll always be right around the 35-40 year old range. My folks are still very young in heart and in appearance. Both are still extremely active (probably too active sometimes - Dad!) and just plain fun to be around.
And, as you all know, being married for 50 years to the same person is no small feat. I know that mom and dad had some pretty difficult years throughout those 50 years, but the commitment they made to each other at the alter was irrevocable. Any thing other than “’til death do us part” was never even a consideration - not that I ever thought the tough times got to the point where they would have considered it - but I was just a kid watching from the sidelines.
In those 50 years (well the 45 of them that I’ve been part of the picture) I’ve watched a couple who love each other very much, a mom with a deep respect for her husband, a dad madly in love with his bride. He’d embarrass us sometimes with his showers of physical affection (he’ll know what I mean - ‘nuf said) and mom, being a bit on the shy side just rolled her eyes and laughed - and kept cooking.
Dad and Mom married in the “old country”, the Netherlands. They met at the party of a mutual friend and I’m not quite sure how long they “dated” before getting married but I know it wasn’t all that long. Dad had his sights set on coming over to this great land of America and although Mom wasn’t to keen on the idea, he threw her on the ship and off they went.
The picture you see is them at the courthouse portion of their wedding (I think I’m right there). In Holland when you marry you get married first by the “state” and then go off and do the church ceremony. It’s a pretty full day.
Mom rented her dress I think - isn’t it gorgeous? - and you don’t see it in this picture but Dad had a nice big top hat too.
And as you can see, they look pretty happy - and they still are.
Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad!

Awww… it’s lovely to hear a a true love story these days. I should have rented my dress too. What a waste of money to wear one day and leave hanging in the closet for eternity…
