The story of Basha
Here is the story behind my Wordless Wednesday photo - here’s a smaller version of it:
Isn’t she pretty? She’s about 13 years old now and has been with our family since she was about 10 weeks old.
My husband is allergic to cats and I’ve always grown up with them so it was a huge thing for me not to have a cat for the first few years of our marriage.
Because he’s such a sweetie he said to me one day, “let’s just try it and see how I do.” And then he told me to go get a cat as a birthday gift.
I did the usual shelter rounds close to our home but then I opened the classifieds and there was an ad selling “hypo-allergenic cats” - this was some new breed just imported from Russia and the breeder was about an hour away. So off I went to check out the litter.
I fell in love! Who wouldn’t with such a cutie pie kitten who came right to me and was mine before I got the second foot into the door of their home.
Basha has been sitting on hubby’s lap, sleeping on his pillow and more and he’s never had a reaction to her - ever. This from the man who walks into a home with most domestic cats and his eyes swell shut.
We love the breed so much that 3 years ago we got two more of them, direct from Russia, for our daughters!

What a nice story. I am not really a cat person but my hubby is. He has been thinking of getting a cat but I say - the dogs will eat it - lol.
That is a nice story. What a sweet hubby and an adorable kitty.
HI! nice blog! One thing you failed to say was what the breed was. For everybody wondering the cat she is talking about is a Siberian cat. They are a breed that came to US from Russia in 1990.
Thanks Kathy - I realized this morning that I didn’t say the breed. Siberians are fabulous cats - not just because they can usually be tolerated by people with cat allergies but because their temperaments are fabulous too. Our youngest girl, Gavana, “talks” to us all day long with chirps and little meows - it’s very endearing. And you’ve seen our boy, Scamper’s, antics on previous posts. Personality abounds in these felines and if you’re considering a cat - give them a good look. They’re sweet sweet sweet!
what a cute cat! Great story.
I had not seen the breed before.
[...] has been a part of our home now for over 14 years. I told her story HERE and yesterday posted some pictures of her for Wordless [...]
I loved seeing the pic of your cat as an adult and a kitten! That is really neat that your husband hasn’t ever had a reaction to them! I didn’t know there was such a thing as ‘hypo-allergenic’ cats! LOL
